(Quang Tri Web) On October 24th, 2017, Mr. Nguyen Quan Chinh, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee together with leaders of related departments and agencies had a meeting and a working session with the delegation of the Mekong Institute led by Mr. Watcharas Leelawath, Director of the Mekong Institute.
Project "Capacity building towards comprehensive and equitable development of the Mekong sub-region" pilot phase in Quang Tri has contributed to the development of the coffee sector in the province with the introduction and implementation of interventions and initiatives, including two interconnected models: "4-Party Link” (Facilitating coffee farmers to access to preferential loans to buy quality fertilizers with low prices) and "Farmer-Business Direct Link” (Direct link between group of coffee farmers producing quality coffee and large enterprises/units).
After visiting the farmers who harvested coffee in Huong Phung Commune, Huong Hoa district; Mr. Watcharas Leelawath expressed his pleasure in the results and progress of the project, especially the direct benefits of farmers joining the group, the quality of the coffee was improved markedly and the price was higher. He also said that the purpose of this trip was to visit the Institute's project in Quang Tri as well as promote the images of the project and Quang Tri province to everyone. Therefore, in the future, these two models will be multiplied with the support of the Swiss donor and Quang Tri province,
Giving speech at the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Quan Chinh, Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee said: coffee area of the province is not large but high quality; However, recently, the quality of coffee in some places has gone down due to the competition, the low price of coffee, which made it difficult for the households to borrow money to invest in coffee gardens.
The Provincial People's Committee highly appreciates the effectiveness of the project "Capacity Building towards comprehensive and equitable development of the Mekong sub-region" in the province. The project has practical significance, not only improves the quality of coffee, but also reduces transportation costs, enhances the co-operation between buyers and sellers and raises the coffee selling prices. Successfully applying two models has helped raising incomes for farmers in the group and increasing profits for businesses, fertilizer suppliers and loan providers.
Thanking Mekong Institute for its support and contribution in terms of budget and human resources in promoting border trade, enhancing the value chain of Khe Sanh coffee, contributing to socio-economic development in Quang Tri, Mr. Nguyen Quan Chinh, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee wanted this model to be popularized and replicated so that the life of coffee growers is stable and improved; as well as to broaden the activities and initiatives at the broader scope. Mr. Nguyen Quan Chinh sent invitations to the project sponsor and Mekong Institute to visit and inspect the project for objective evaluation, as the premise for a more effective implementation of the project in the second phase. Mr. Nguyen Quan Chinh is committed to working with Mekong Institute to successfully implement this project.
